Canon Oceania’s 2026 Grants Program: A 20-Year Tradition of Impact
Canon Oceania has opened applications for its 2026 Grants Program, commemorating two decades of dedicated support to community organizations across Australia and New Zealand. This initiative will award over $50,000 in prizes to grant recipients in four categories: Education, Community, Environment, and First Nations/Cultural.
Winners will each receive $5,000 in cash and Canon products, facilitating their storytelling endeavors and outreach efforts. To celebrate this milestone, an additional $12,000 worth of studio and content packages will also be available as extra accolades. Since its inception in 2007, the Grants Program has invested a substantial $648,000 in 130 organizations, enhancing their capacity to effect change within their communities.
Reaching New Heights: A Legacy Built on Trust
Celebrated as Canon’s longest-running community program in the region, the Grants Program epitomizes the company’s Kyosei philosophy—living and working together for the common good. Kotaro Fukushima, Managing Director & CEO of Canon Oceania, emphasizes the program’s evolution: “Twenty years ago, we began providing small, targeted support to help community organizations make a bigger impact. Now, we’re searching for eight more organizations with innovative ideas about how imaging technology can help them create lasting change.”
Transformative Partnerships: Success Stories That Inspire
The tangible benefits of the Grants Program are evident through the successes of its recipients. Take Rainforest Rescue, for instance. Initially receiving funding in 2018, the organization has transformed its single grant into a robust partnership with Canon, which now supports vital rainforest regeneration efforts in the Daintree National Park. Kristin Canning, Partnerships Director at Rainforest Rescue, describes this relationship as transformative: “This partnership is built on trust, allowing us to create significant changes for nature together.”
Similarly, the Hobart Rivulet Platypus project benefited from support that propelled its documentary, Becoming Platypus, into production, highlighting the vulnerable platypus population. Pete Walsh, a 2023 grant recipient, noted, “The funding gave us the support we needed... to conserve and protect them for future generations.”
The Power of Storytelling: Amplifying Voices through Technology
For numerous organizations, Canon’s Grants have proven to be long-term investments. Teigan Butchers from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance shared that the camera supported by their 2023 grant has been vital for capturing advocacy moments, helping to raise awareness and share compelling stories from individuals with cerebral palsy.
Moreover, Camera Story, a past grant recipient, continues to leverage Canon cameras bought through a previous grant to facilitate photography workshops across regional and remote communities. Co-Founder Sarah Landro asserts that these tools have been central to fostering creative expression and storytelling.
Apply Now: Shape the Future of Your Community
The deadline for applications is fast approaching, with submissions accepted until 11:59 pm AEST/NZT on June 14, 2026. Now is the time for organizations to articulate their bold ideas to harness imaging technology for social good. As the wider community votes on the finalists in July, and winners are announced in August, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
